This month, Breadfast joins millions of other companies, organizations, and communities around the world in observing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Throughout the duration of October, you can expect to see pink themed posts, campaigns, and ribbons as part of the annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease. If you are a breast cancer survivor, fighter, or know of someone who was affected by breast cancer; we see you, we believe in you, and we care about you. You are a fighter.
Why is Breast Cancer Awareness so important?
Breast cancer can affect both men and women, but it is the most common cancer in women, making up about 25% of all cancers for the female population. That’s why almost all of us know of someone who was affected by breast cancer, and some of us have personally fought the battle against the disease itself. Even though it is a common cancer, it can be very treatable if detected early.
According to the World Health Organization, survival rates vary worldwide, with rates being 80% or more in more developed countries, but dipping to around 40% in lesser developed countries. Women in low income communities are more often at risk of succumbing to breast cancer because of a lack of resources and education. So, it is incredibly important for us all to educate women everywhere about the importance of regular mammogram screenings, and the common signs and symptoms of breast cancer. The sooner the cancer is detected and diagnosed, the more likely we can save a life.
Mammograms are the only screening method proven to be effective at accurately diagnosing breast cancer, because symptoms are not always present. If you have a family history of breast cancer, this is especially important! Regular screenings once a year are the best way to catch the disease early on, and increase chances of successful treatment. While warning signs are different for every woman, some other indications of breast cancer may be:

- Changes in the look or feel of the breast
- Changes in the look or feel of the nipple
- Nipple discharge that is bloody or clear (not milky)
If you or a loved one experience any of these symptoms, it’s important to consult a doctor immediately.
Look out for the “Pink Muffin” at Breadfast
Breadfast is proud to support breast cancer fighters and those who fight with them, including Baheya. Baheya is a non-profit organization in Egypt that specializes in early detection and treatment for women diagnosed with breast cancer. This month (from October 1st to the 31st), you’ll find a new product in the bakery section: a delicious little “pink muffin,” decorated with a pink ribbon on top! 20% of all the pink muffin proceeds will go to the Baheya Cancer Foundation to support all the breast cancer warriors.
